2008 CDOW Winter Feeding Operation

On August 16, 2008 mule deer
enthusiasts met at the Grand
Junction City Hall to view a
presentation on the 2008 CDOW
winter feeding program.

CMDAGrand Junction Chapter
president, Denny Behrens,
addressed the crowd and
introduced the CDOW personnel.

CDOW showed a DVD on the Gunnison Basin program and a presentation on the Eagle Valley feeding efforts.

In Gunnison, 250 volunteers, as well as CDOW staff fed 900 tons of hay and 840 tons of deer pellets one bale at a time on snowmobiles.

Volunteers donated about 10,000 man hours to keep the deer and antelope herds from starving to death.

Losses are reported to be 50% of antelope, 30% of deer and 5% of elk.
The elk were fed to keep them off the road and away from hay stacks.

In Wolcott, CDOW staff fed 1,700 pounds of pellets to 4,000 deer.

CDOW personnel, Perry Will (left) and J. Wenum (center), outlined the command structure for the feeding program.

After the presentation, CMDA gave awards to CDOW personnel who were instrumental in saving our deer herds.

J. Wenum led the

Perry Will was the man

Others receiving recognition were Steve Yamashita, Ron Velarde,
Tom Speeze, Don Masden and Matt Thorpe.
